How to Care for Non-Stick Pans: Make Them Last Years Longer
A quality non-stick pan should last years โ but most fail within months due to a handful of avoidable mistakes. These care guidelines apply to all non-stick coatings including PTFE, ceramic, and hard anodised surfaces. For buying recommendations, see our best non-stick pans guide.
Never Use Metal Utensils
This is the most common cause of premature non-stick failure. Metal spatulas, spoons, whisks, and tongs scratch and score the coating on every use. Use only silicone, wood, or nylon utensils on non-stick surfaces. Keep a dedicated set of non-stick-safe utensils near your pans. See our best kitchen gadgets guide for recommended utensil sets.
Never Preheat an Empty Pan
Non-stick coatings degrade rapidly when overheated without food or fat. PTFE begins releasing fumes at 260ยฐC โ which an empty pan on high heat can reach within minutes. Always add oil or food before turning on the heat, or use low to medium heat settings only. Non-stick pans are not designed for high-heat searing โ use stainless steel or cast iron for that. See our cast iron pan guide for the best high-heat searing alternative.
Hand Wash Only
Dishwashers are the second leading cause of non-stick pan failure. The high heat, harsh detergents, and aggressive water jets degrade the coating significantly faster than hand washing. Wash by hand with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth or sponge.
Store Correctly
Stacking non-stick pans without protection scratches the coating on every contact. Use pan protectors โ fabric or felt discs placed between stacked pans โ or hang pans individually. The small investment in pan protectors extends the lifespan of quality non-stick pans significantly. For storage solutions, see our kitchen organisation guide.
When to Replace
Replace a non-stick pan when the coating shows visible peeling, flaking, or deep scratches. A quality non-stick pan properly cared for should last 3-5 years in regular use.
